Sooo Emby

I have recently switched to Emby from Plex for my Home media server needs.

I had no problems with the performance of Plex other than the want for something a little more open-sourced and transparent. Suffice it to say Plex started with a mantra, and it soon slipped into corporatisation. Not something I feel safe with.

The switch to Emby was pretty smooth; just a little time to rebuild the nearly 10Tb library, and I was off! Configuration is pretty awesome, too; it’s more of a feature-rich server with just a little setup learning curve.

Saving energy and money!

I recently purchased a NAS (Specifically QNAP TS-451+) in an effort to save some energy usage from my 250W server. On 365/24, the QNAP NAS has a max 90W, so it should help keep the bills in control, however….

Emby running on here is a pain in the butt, I’m not sure if it’s my configuration of running it on a VM (windows 10) and that it’s making the CPU crap out, but it struggles to re-encode x265 for playback on anything other than an android device? I’ve read, and apparently, it’s a thing about x265 that it struggles to play on a few environments.

I think my options from here are:

  1. Moving the Emby Server into a container removes the extra work of an OS behind it all (however, I’m not convinced this will solve my x265 issues.)
  2. Convert a good chunk of media back into x264 and lose nearly 3 TB of freed space.
  3. Go back to the server being on 24/7

I’ll update once I’ve decided or trialled and errored a few methods.
