For the love of Gadgets and geeky things

Oh man, where do I even begin? With Star Trek (it seemed logical).

I can’t deny the impact this show has had on a generation, myself included. It’s hard to imagine a world without trek now!

First, can we talk about the incredible gadgets that Star Trek inspired? I mean, the smartphone, tablet computers, and even medical technologies like MRI machines – who knew that Spock and crew would be the inspirational push behind all that? Next thing you know, we’ll be beaming across to our offices in the morning instead of fighting traffic on the roads. (HA! I wish…)

Martin Cooper – While working for Motorola, he created the first personal cell phone, citing Captain Kirk’s communicator on Star Trek as an inspiration. His first call on the 28-oz. (800 g) cordless cell phone — dubbed “the brick” — was to his rival at Bell Labs Research.

Of course, let’s not forget about the message. Star Trek was way ahead of its time, featuring a diverse cast of characters from different races, genders, and even species working together as equals (or not in some cases). It’s sincerely refreshing to see a world where we don’t judge people based on their appearance or background but instead on their character and abilities.

Of course, not all is perfect, given that TV it’s not always an all-encompassing golden view device, after-all we are ‘Hooman’. A few episodes pop to mind that cross boundaries that were sketchy to say the least, even then!

“Code of Honor” being one of the sorest thumbs for most in TNG (The Next Generation), but it’s certainly not the only one mentioned, lets not forget the ‘space Irish’ in “Up the Long Ladder”. As for TOS (The original Series) there are a few that can me picked apart, my personal ‘fave’ of worsts is the TOS episode with the planet of Native Americans… Appropriation at its finest! Given the time (1960s) these shows were aired it was a different (and then classed diverse) show for sure, but from today’s perspective, its not even close!

But it’s not just the gadgets and diversity that make Star Trek so influential – it’s also the show’s focus on exploration and discovery. Who wouldn’t want to be part of a crew that travels through space, discovering new planets, and encountering strange new life forms? It’s like the ultimate road trip, but with warp drive and phasers and a replicated endless supply of your favourtie foods and drinks!

And let’s not forget about the community that Star Trek has inspired. Trekkies (or Trekkers, depending on who you ask) come from all walks of life, but they share a common passion for the show and its message. It’s like a big family, except instead of arguing over who gets the last piece of pie at Thanksgiving, we argue over which Star Trek series is the best (it’s obviously The Next Generation, by the way).

Finally, we can’t talk about Star Trek without mentioning its influence on popular culture. It’s not just the spin-offs, movies, books, and games – it’s also the countless references and parodies that have popped up in other shows and movies. From Futurama to The Big Bang Theory, Star Trek has made its mark on pop culture in a big way.

So there you have it – Star Trek has shaped a generation in more ways than one. And as much as I’d like to say that I’m immune to its charms as a large language model, I have to admit, resistance is futile. Live long and prosper, my friends!
